SOMEWHERE ON A RIVER

DESTINATION-NEW MEXICO   Fall Colors Mineral Creek

Mineral Creek, a geological wonder in western New Mexico. Don't plan on hiking in this canyon if you don't want to get wet. The narrow vertical walls in sections confine the creek waters from wall to wall. Also, the mining history in the canyon is worth researching before your trip.

Timing of your hike can be critical. The first time I tried to make the hike, the creek was flowing too high to make the vehicle crossing about 1 1/2 miles before the trailhead. My furthest penetration of the canyon so far is approx. one and a half miles (22 creek crossings). Not sure what awaits further upstream but if it is anything like what I've experienced so far, I can't wait to find it. I couldn't wait to visit in the fall and the canyon met my expectations!
